  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: Most relatives and friends of people living with AIDS (PLWA)
  10.        ignore how to take care of PLWA, when they are sick at home; for fear
  11.        and prjudice still hinder appropriate home care. The volunteers of the
  12.        Amigos acompanantes program (buddy system) promote emotional and
  13.        practical support for PLWA, using a video designed to sensibilize and
  14.        educate relatives and friends. METHOD: To design and produce the video,
  15.        a survey and interviews were carried out with volunteer buddies, health
  16.        professionals, relatives and friends of PLWA. With the data obteined,
  17.        the main needs of practical and emotional support were identified. The
  18.        video was designed within the methodological framework of popular
  19.        education, which encourages the participation of the community in
  20.        actively solving its problems. An expert on educational videos produced
  21.        a video which was presented (tested) to focal groups of relatives and
  22.        friends, as well as in a national workshop to train volunteers on
  23.        emotional and practical support for PLWA. A practical guide for the use
  24.        of the video was also designed so that trainers and volunteers could
  25.        make the best use of the video based on the popular education
  26.        methodology. RESULTS: Once the comments of focal groups were evaluated,
  27.        the corrections were made and material reproduced. Presently, the
  28.        evaluation of the materials and the impact are being carried out.
